RESTRICTIONS FOR DOG AND CAT OWNERSHIP BY MUNICIPALITY

Wisconsin pet ownership laws can vary greatly even from one town to the next. How many pets can you have? Is there a limit to the number of cats or dogs you can own? What shots do you need to get your pet? Does your dog or cat need to be licensed? Find out the answers to all of your pet ownership questions by clicking on your local municipality below.

Information for Byron – Fond du Lac County Pet Owners

The State of Wisconsin requires all dog owners to have a rabies license for their dogs which are usually available through local municipalities. Residents of Byron may apply for a license with Fond du Lac County.

  • Spayed/Neutered Dogs: $2.00
  • Unaltered Dogs: $5.00
  • Late Fee: $5.00

Byron Pet Limits:

  • No more than 4 dogs per home (exception for puppies with a permit)
  • No limit specified on cats per home (contact your local officials for more information)

There are some additional exceptions for how many pets you are allowed to own. Puppies and kittens are allowed to stay with their mother until they are old enough to be safely vaccinated.

Information for Caledonia – Racine County Pet Owners

Rabies licenses are required by the State of Wisconsin to reduce the spread of this deadly disease. Dogs in Caledonia must be licensed by January 31st, earlier than most other municipalities in southeast Wisconsin. As a result, it is important to know exactly what you need when getting your dog’s license. You must bring paperwork showing your dog has received their latest shots with you to the municipal offices.

  • Spayed/Neutered Dogs: $15.00
  • Unaltered Dogs: $25.00
  • Late Fee: $10.00

Cats are not required to have their own license in Racine County.

Caledonia Pet Limits:

  • No more than 3 dogs per home (exception for puppies under 5 months of age)
  • No limit specified on cats per home (contact your local officials for more information)

Information for Cudahy – Milwaukee County Pet Owners

Pet owners living in Cudahy must follow the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC) which requires all dogs and cats to be licensed. The license is proof your dog or cat has received their rabies vaccinations. Cats are required to have a license in Cudahy.

  • Spayed/Neutered Pets: $12.00
  • Unaltered Pets: $24.00
  • Late Fee: $6-$12

Any puppy or kitten over 5 months old must have a license by July 1st:

  • Spayed/Neutered Pets: $6.00
  • Unaltered Pets: $12.00

City of Cudahy Pet Limits:

  • No more than 3 pets per home (exception for puppies and kittens under 5 months of age)
  • Pit bulls require a special permit

Information for Eden – Fond du Lac County Pet Owners

Dog and cat licenses are used by the State of Wisconsin to keep track of which pets have received their legally required rabies vaccinations. Pet owners in Eden may apply for a license with Fond du Lac County. Check with the Eden Community Center to learn more details about licensing your pets.

  • Late Fee: $5.00

Eden Pet Limits:

  • No more than 2 dogs per home (exception for puppies under 3 months of age)
  • No more than 2 cats per home (exception for kittens under 6 months of age)

Information for Fond du Lac – Fond du Lac County Pet Owners

The city of Fond du Lac requires cats and dogs to be licensed to live within city limits. Applications are due by March 31st and must be renewed each year to show your pets are up-to-date with their rabies vaccination. The vets of Animal Wellness Center will provide records of your pet’s rabies vaccination.

  • Spayed/Neutered Pets: $10.00
  • Unaltered Pets: $20.00
  • Late Fee: $10.00

If you move to Fond du Lac with your pets after the March 31st deadline, you have 30 days to apply for a license with no late fees.

City of Fond du Lac Pet Limits:

  • No more than 3-4 pets per home (multiple pet license available for $25)

You only need a license for pets over 5 months of age, since many puppies and kittens cannot be vaccinated until they reach a certain size and weight.

Information for Marblehead – Fond du Lac County Pet Owners

Dog licenses are legally required for dog owners in the State of Wisconsin. Since Marblehead is unincorporated, pet owners should go through Fond du Lac to get their licenses. Cats do not require a license, though a rabies vaccination is still recommended to keep your feline safe and healthy.

Town of Marblehead Pet Limits:

Information for North Prairie – Waukesha County Pet Owners

The Village of North Prairie requires all dogs and cats to be licensed. Dog owners must only provide proof their pet has received their latest rabies vaccinations while cat owners must show proof their cat is spayed/neutered and vaccinated.

  • Spayed/Neutered Dogs: $15.00
  • Unaltered Dogs: $17.00
  • Spayed/Neutered Cats: $6.00
  • Unaltered Cats: $11.00

North Prairie Pet Limits:

  • No more than 2 dogs per home
  • No more than 2 cats per home (exception for kittens under 5 months of age)

If you are moving to North Prairie and have more than 2 dogs, don’t worry! You will not be forced to give away your pets. Instead, you must get a license for each additional pet at the time of your move and each subsequent year. Current North Prairie residents may not exceed the 2 pet limit, except in the case of puppies and kittens who are unable to be separated from their mother or handlers.

Oak Creek, like the rest of Milwaukee County, must follow the rules set forth by the Milwaukee Area Domestic Animal Control Commission (MADACC). All pet owners must have a license for dogs and cat over 6 months of age proving they have received a rabies vaccination.

  • Spayed/Neutered Pets: $12.00
  • Unaltered Pets: $24.00
  • Late Fee: $12.00

Oak Creek Pet Limits:

  • No more than 2 dogs per home (exception for puppies under 6 months of age)
  • No limit specified on cats per home (contact your local officials for more information)

Information for Oakfield – Fond du Lac County Pet Owners

Oakfield residents must have their dog licensed each year by April 1st. This is a requirement of the State of Wisconsin to ensure pets are vaccinated for rabies. To get this license from the Oakfield Village Office, you will need to bring documentation from our Animal Wellness Center vets proving your dog has had their latest shots.

  • Spayed/Neutered Dogs: $5.00
  • Unaltered Dogs: $10.00
  • Late Fee: $5.00

The late fee applies to any application received after April 1st with two exceptions: your dog is a puppy under 5 months of age or you adopt your dog after that date. In those cases, you should get a license once the puppy has had their first vaccination or within 30 days of adoption.

Oakfield Pet Limits:

  • No more than 3 dogs per home
  • No more than 3 cats per home
  • No more than 3 pets total per home

Information for Saylesville – Waukesha County Pet Owners

The State of Wisconsin requires all dogs to have a license, usually available through local municipalities, proving they have received the rabies vaccination and appropriate boosters. Since Saylesville in unincorporated, licenses may be obtained through the Town of Genesee. Dog licenses are available starting January 1st and must be purchased by March 31st to avoid a $5 late fee. You must bring evidence of rabies vaccination with you when applying for the license. Cat owners in Saylesville do not need a license.

A Hobby Kennel License is available for $50 for homes with more dogs then the allowed 2. This is only for homes capable of caring for multiple dogs in a kennel atmosphere.

The Village of Wales has dog tags available for residents starting in mid-December, as required by the state of Wisconsin. You will need to bring proof of their rabies vaccination with you when applying for the dog license. This proof will be provided by your Animal Wellness Center veterinarian after your dog receives their shots. Cats do not need a license in the Village of Wales.

Information For Watertown – Jefferson & Dodge County Pet Owners

Dog & Cat Licenses Due January 1 Each Year

Licenses for dogs and cats are issued for the calendar year and expire December 31. You may receive a citation for pets not licensed by this date. Reminder cards will NOT be sent. New licenses are generally available in mid-December for the following calendar year. A $5.00 late fee will be assessed for licenses obtained after the last Friday in March. City ordinances require ALL dogs and cats to be licensed even if they do not go outside. Proof of a current rabies vaccination before issuing a dog license. There is no proof of rabies vaccination required for a cat.

License fees are:

  • Non-altered dog or cat: $10.00 yearly
  • Spayed/neutered dog or cat: $5.00 yearly

Are you a new pet owner or did you just move to Watertown? If so, below are the deadlines to license your pet:

  • When your pet is five (5) months of age and has obtained a rabies vaccination.
  • Within thirty (30) days of obtaining a dog or cat over five months of age, or
  • Within thirty (30) days of moving into the City with a dog or cat over five months of age.

Watertown Pet Limits:

No more than 4 dogs per home and no more than 5 cats per home, with the exception that a litter of pups or litter of kittens or a portion of litter may be kept for a period of time not exceeding four months from birth.

In Wind Point, dogs are required to have a rabies license which must be renewed each year. The license is used as proof your dog is up-to-date on all their legally required vaccinations. Cats are not required to have a license in Wind Point.

Not getting your dog a rabies license can put them in danger if they ever run away or bite someone.
